New Learner PermitYou need to apply to your local NDLS Centre for a learner permit

You must be at least 17 years of age to hold a Learner Permit for a car and it costs €35.00.  However there is no extra charge to change a name or address, remove an endorsement or correct a mistake such as a wrong date of birth or incorrect address

• You have to have a learner permit in order to learn to drive and to take lessons

• It is an offence to drive on a Learner Permit without L Plates 

New Learner Permit• Your Learner Permit is only valid in the Republic of Ireland 

• Since January 2013 all learner permits are a plastic credit card type

• You must be accompanied at all times when driving under a learner permit. The accompanying driver must be a full licensed driver for at least 2 years

• Your learner permit must be at least 6 months old before you can do a test

Old Learner Permit• The learner permit lasts 2 years and if you wish to renew it in order to get a second one you can do so through your local NDLS Office, which is located in Redmond Square in Wexford

• However if you need a third learner permit you must have done a driving test in the previous two years or have applied for a test. If you can prove you have done a test in the previous two years a two year permit will be given to you, and if you have applied for a test then a one year permit will be granted.  If your learner permit is lost or stolen then part of your application for for a replacement must be filled out at a Garda Station
